Insecticides can harm bees and butterflies, even when used on other plants nearby.

Instead

  • Accept a few chewed leaves; caterpillars become butterflies
  • Let birds and beneficial insects control pests
  • Hand-pick or hose off pests
  • Ask nurseries whether plants were treated with systemic insecticides
  • If you must use a product, follow the label exactly and never spray open flowers
