Many native bees, butterflies and other insects spend winter in hollow stems, leaf litter and seed heads.
How
- Leave stems and seed heads standing over winter
- Birds such as goldfinches eat the seeds
- Cut back in spring once it's consistently warm
- Leave cut stems 8 to 24 inches tall; some bees nest in them
- Leave some leaves in garden beds
