Prepare the ground

Clear competition first.

5 min read

Wildflower seed can't compete with lawn grass and weeds. Good preparation is the key to success.

Ways to clear an area

  • Smother: cover with cardboard or a tarp for several months
  • Solarize: clear plastic over moist soil during hot summer weeks
  • Dig out turf for small areas
  • Avoid deep tilling, which brings up buried weed seeds

No fertilizer

Most native wildflowers do well in average soil. Fertilizer mostly helps weeds and grass.
