Hi there,
This month's tip: leave the stems
Hold off on cutting back your coneflowers, bee balm and grasses. Hollow stems and leaf litter shelter native bees and other insects through winter, and seed heads feed goldfinches. Cut back in spring once it's consistently warm, and leave some stems standing.

Native plant to know: New England aster
Purple daisies in fall, just when migrating monarchs need fuel. Full sun, tough and easy to grow in much of the East and Midwest.
Reader question
"When should I sow wildflower seed?" Late fall works well for many natives, because they need a cold winter to sprout. See Sow wildflower seed.
